At Perkins Eastman, I also contributed to another study called “Cool Streets” in response to the “heat island effect,” which addresses the increasing danger of high temperatures for urban populations using public space. Already in its advanced phase, I contributed to the development of a design intervention in a case study area in New York where we applied cooling and place-making strategies previously studied to alleviate health risks from urban heat while creating a new meeting spots for people in the public space. These strategies fall into 4 categories: passive (do not require energy), active (require energy), educational (information for the public on health and extreme heat events) and placemaking (used as “attractors” to ensure that the space becomes a true community asset). The periodic table on the side summarizes these categories while classifies the effectiveness and cost of each strategy - also represented in little diagrams (top) created to contextualize in a small scenario. I was responsible for the creation of all these graphics, and I had the important challenge of translating all written content into, diagrams, and 2D/3D illustrations. The white paper can be downloaded here.
