The Interlock is an academic project developed in the third-year double-quarter studio at Cal Poly with the recognized Dr. Umut Toker, one of the “Most Admired Educators” by 2017-18 DesignIntelligence rankings. The Interlock is a virtual reality research center that encompasses a differentiated program going beyond the standard workplaces and labs for technology companies. This includes innovation pods, creative cloud, an experiential center open to the public as a new way to showcase the new technologies while testing and gathering data for product improvements, and an open office throughout various landing levels forming a dynamic wide staircase overlooking the stage of a smaller auditorium with retractable opening. The project also included a hotel program, rooftop eatery, indoor and outdoor gardens. Through Cal Poly’s “learn by doing” philosophy, my partner and I included technological innovation in our design process, studied parametric design and integrated digital fabrication into our design process for rapid prototyping & analysis, using various digital softwares, 3D printers and virtual reality exploration. Thus, enhancing my perspective on the integration of various systems in architecture. At the end of this academic year at Cal Poly, I was recognized at Dean's Honors List for my academic performance and GPA over 3.5.
